Spiber and Stella McCartney have collaborated for over four years, advancing material development and exploring the most suitable expressions for the brand’s collections. Known for challenging the notion that luxury must rely on animal-derived materials, Stella McCartney shares a vision of redefining what luxury can represent. This collaboration reflects a joint commitment to expanding that definition through innovation in materials.

As a significant share of fashion’s environmental impact originates from raw materials, reducing impact at scale requires rethinking how those materials are produced. Spiber’s Brewed Protein™ fiber enables protein-based materials to be created through fermentation rather than livestock farming, representing a transition from pasture-based production to precision fermentation and a structural evolution in material manufacturing.

The Winter 2026 collection features exceptionally fine Brewed Protein™ fiber measuring 12 to 14 microns in diameter, contributing to its distinctive texture and smooth, refined hand feel.

Garments incorporating Brewed Protein™ fiber will be released as part of the Stella McCartney Winter 2026 collection. Further details regarding retail availability will be announced in due course.

Going forward, Spiber will continue working alongside Stella McCartney as a partner advancing the brand’s exploration of new possibilities in fashion through next-generation materials, while pursuing a balance between creativity and more responsible production.

The collection features a yarn that combines Brewed Protein™ fiber—known for its fine, smooth surface—with cotton. The distinctive texture of the protein-based fiber is complemented by the gentle touch of cotton, creating a soft, enveloping feel and everyday comfort.

To honor the material’s natural character, the yarn is intentionally left undyed. This approach preserves its inherent color and texture, allowing JUUKIFF’s design philosophy, “A Structured Intimacy”—a balance between structure and softness—to be expressed through this collection.

The latest release introduces a bolero and a long dress. Undyed Brewed Protein™ fiber is woven into the weft, allowing the material’s natural color to remain visible. By leveraging the differential shrinkage between fibers, the fabric develops a distinctive three-dimensional pleated texture.

Through this approach, the inherent characteristics of protein-based fibers are carefully brought to the forefront, presenting new possibilities for material-driven expression.

As part of its JAPAN COLLECTION, THE NORTH FACE—an outdoor brand operated by Goldwin in Japan—has unveiled a collection that reinterprets the traditional Japanese craft of sashiko through a contemporary lens, combining Japanese craftsmanship with advanced outdoor technologies. Within this collection, the Nuptse Hanten Jacket and the Nuptse Sashiko Hanten Jacket incorporate Brewed Protein™ fiber, developed by Spiber.

The collection presents products that bring together sashiko, a symbol of Japanese handcraft, and the structural concept of the short winter hanten coat, while integrating the functional performance required of outdoor apparel alongside emerging material technologies.

Among these offerings, we are honored that our material has been adopted in two reinterpreted versions of the iconic Nuptse jacket—first introduced in 1992 as a mountaineering jacket and now widely embraced as an everyday garment—as well as in the highly popular Nuptse Bootie.

The fleece jacket combines a fur material made from a blend of Brewed Protein™ fiber and silk with a boa fleece fabric based on the bio-derived material PlaX. In addition, the use of pattern-optimization techniques in the production process contributes to reducing fabric waste, resulting in an innovative piece that reflects the designers’ forward-looking approach.

The material and structural design perspectives explored by J.L-A.L and Goldwin open up new possibilities for apparel development, and we are truly pleased that our material could once again be incorporated into a part of their collection this year. • Premium, skin-friendly comfort: The T-shirt uses an ultrafine 14-micron grade Brewed Protein™ fiber blended at 7%, paired with 93% single-origin Australian cotton (“HASE-1”). Traceability is ensured throughout all stages from raw cotton sourcing to spinning, knitting, and sewing. The 40-count twin yarn, produced using technology by Hasetora Spinning and knitted at high density on a 24-gauge machine, results in a fabric boasting both softness and structure.
  
  
• Meticulous pattern design, sewn with cotton thread: The sleeve, side, and neckline patterns are precisely designed to the single degree and millimeter. Sewing is done with cotton thread rather than polyester, requiring skilled workmanship to achieve durability and comfort. • Natural odor control: The material neutralizes ammonia and acetic acid, helping suppress odor at its source. The effect continues even after repeated washing (based on JIS standard tests; actual effectiveness may vary based on usage environment).
  
  
• Next-generation production and distribution: Brewed Protein™ fiber is manufactured in Tsuruoka, spinning and knitting take place in Bishu, dyeing and finishing in Osaka, and sewing in Kumamoto, resulting in a product fully made in Japan. Bonmax maintains inventory of the blank T-shirt body, enabling small-lot ordering starting from one piece, and also supports secondary processing such as sublimation printing and embroidery. This approach moves away from mass-production and aims to deliver products only when and where they are needed.

The festival is a one-day, hands-on event where visitors can “see,” “touch,” “learn,” and “enjoy” science at Tsuruoka Science Park—one of the region’s leading research hubs. Through collaboration among research institutes, companies, and the local community, the event offers people of all ages an opportunity to engage with science, technology, and local industries.

On the day of the event, Spiber’s main research building (1F entrance) will be open to the public, featuring exhibits of Brewed Protein™ materials and apparel products, as well as limited-edition T-shirts available for purchase.

Researchers from Spiber will also introduce the characteristics of microorganisms and explain the Brewed Protein™ material production process. In addition, the dress provided by Spiber for Hikaru Utada’s SCIENCE FICTION TOUR 2024, marking the first time a material development team has contributed to the artist’s tour wardrobe, will also be on display.

First commercial application of Brewed Protein™ fiber in the mobility sector

Spiber and Goldwin Inc., the company behind the outdoor brand The North Face, have long collaborated on material development in the sports apparel field, releasing apparel products featuring Brewed Protein™ fiber. Through this shared experience, both companies resonated with CORDE by’s vision—“to realize a more sustainable automotive society by enabling cars to be cherished and used for longer”—leading to the realization of this collaboration.

In 2023, the project members unveiled a concept model of the vehicle at the Japan Mobility Show, featuring seat covers partially made with Spiber’s man-made protein fiber, Brewed Protein™ fiber. Now, the model’s official production and launch have been confirmed, and it will be showcased once again at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. This marks the first time Brewed Protein™ fiber has been used in a commercially available mobility product.

A new landscape for sustainable mobility

The name NEWSCAPE embodies the concept of introducing a “new landscape” to everyday car life. By integrating Brewed Protein™ fiber into the vehicle’s interior, the project redefines sustainability at the material level and represents a new frontier for Spiber in the mobility sector. The model harmonizes natural sensibility with urban sophistication and will be available in two exterior colors designed by The North Face—Meld Gray, and the newly added Graphite Gray.

Presentation at the 2025 SHAN FUTURE FORUM during Shanghai Fashion Week

The collaboration was also introduced at the 2025 SHAN FUTURE FORUM held on October 11 during Shanghai Fashion Week. It was spotlighted as a tangible step forward in advancing both material innovation and sustainable transformation within the fashion industry.

At the forum, Callie Clayton, Global Apparel Product Sales VP at Spiber, joined Stella Zheng from JNBY Group and Han Zhang from Plug and Play China in a panel discussion. Together, they exchanged views on brand–supply chain collaboration to scale new materials and discussed the broader potential of Brewed Protein™ fiber. JNBY Group also announced it had reached its target of 30% sustainable material usage and will continue to adopt advanced biotech materials, including Brewed Protein™ fiber, across its brand portfolio.

This collaboration marks Spiber’s first consumer-facing brand partnership in the Chinese market and represents a shift from industrial collaborations to direct engagement with consumers.
