Spiber unveiled two Brewed Protein™ prototypes—a finishing agent and a surface material—at The Biofab Fair 2025
Spiber recently developed two new prototypes based on Brewed Protein™ materials and presented them for the first time at The Biofab Fair 2025 in London, an international exhibition dedicated to biobased materials and biomanufacturing. Building on the feedback received from industries and stakeholders, we will proceed with further performance evaluations and application development.
Exhibit highlights
Protein-based finish:
A finishing treatment that adds a naturally pleasant handfeel—derived from protein—to polyester fabrics. It offers improvements to moisture regulation and antistatic properties, while retaining durability, quick-dry performance, and ease of care. The treatment can be offered at a price range near that of conventional polyester, making it suitable for broad implementation.

Protein-based surface:
A material that can be applied as a coating or membrane on fabrics to add protective features such as wind resistance. It can also be cast into leather-like sheets with a distinct tactile quality unique to protein-derived materials.

Looking ahead
Through the unveiling of these prototypes, Spiber aims to accelerate the transition from exploratory research to pilot testing and real-world implementation in collaboration with partner companies. This development has also benefited from the technical expertise of Komatsu Matere Co., Ltd., a valued partner since 2023. Looking ahead, we will continue to advance the Brewed Protein™ platform with a view toward applications across apparel, interior furnishings, vehicle interiors, and lifestyle products.
